In 1931, Ferdie Deering joined the
Ada News as a reporter, initially working for no pay in order to learn
the business. He moved to Denison, Texas in 1933 to work in
advertising for The Denison Herald, but
returned to Ada in 1934 as the editor of the morning edition of The Ada
News. He remained in that position until 1937 when he accepted a
temporary position as the associate editor of The Farmer-Stockman
magazine in Oklahoma City. "After completing the (journalism) course (at East Central College), I somewhat spontaneously approached W. D. Little, Sr., publisher of The Ada News, whom I knew slightly. I offered him my services if he would teach me the business. He agreed, turning me over to his associates, Byron Norrell and Roy S. McKeown. I have speculated as to what career I might have followed if W. D. Little had turned me down. Taking on a college boy was a small thing for him, but it was a turning point for me. "The feeling has been with me that this was my calling, and the satisfaction that I have derived from it undergirds my belief that I was directed into my life's work, rather than stumbled into it." - Ferdie Deering |

Curios & Antiques Column
by Ferdie Deering |
|||||||||||||||
The first three dates in 1935 are titled, "Substitute Column." The next two, "Another Column." I do not know the history here, but it appears Ferdie Deering got a chance to substitute for a columnist and then earned a permanent spot settling on "Curios & Antiques" as the name. You will see occasional illustrations in the column that he drew himself. In January 1937, he moved to Oklahoma City to become the Associate Editor of the Farmer-Stockman Magazine.
