COUNTY NAMED FOR: John Newton, a veteran of the American Revolution.

COUNTY SEATS: Three - Near Quicksand Creek (1846), Burkeville (1848), Newton (1853)

COUNTY SEAT NAMED FOR: Same as county.

COURTHOUSES: Three - 1848 (Burkeville), 1856 (Newton), 1903.

STANDING: One - 1903 Second Empire courthouse with additions. This building burned in 2000, but a restoration project has been completed.
