from Comanche County, Oklahoma Territory and a portion of the Chickasaw
Nation. COUNTY NAMED FOR:
President Thomas Jefferson.
COUNTY SEATS:
Ryan was the first County
Seat, but Waurika was designated county seat in 1912 following an
election. COUNTY SEAT NAMED FOR:Derived
from an Indian word meaning "pure water."
COURTHOUSES: Rented space was used in Ryan and
Waurika until the 1931 courthouse was completed.
