COUNTY ORGANIZED: 1907 out of portions of Jackson, Kiamitia (Kiamichi), Cedar and Towson counties of the Choctaw Nation.

COUNTY NAMED FOR: 
The Choctaw Nation.

COUNTY SEAT NAMED FOR: Victor Hugo, a French novelist. The name was chosen by the wife of the townsite developer.

COURTHOUSES: Two -
A rented former Federal courthouse, and a Neo-Classical building completed in 1911. 

STANDING:
 1911 Courthouse that underwent a significant rennovation in 1964 giving it a more modern look.
