COUNTY ORGANIZED: 1907 from a portion of Woods County.

COUNTY NAMED FOR: 
William H. "Alfalfa Bill" Murray (1869-1956), president of the Oklahoma Constitutional Convention and ninth Governor of Oklahoma.

COUNTY SEAT NAMED FOR: The fact that the town site was in the Cherokee Outlet.

COURTHOUSES: Initially county offices and courts were in rented rooms scattered among various buildings in town.  In 1909, the county offices consolidated into a former school building that had been built in 1904.   The current courthouse was completed in 1921.
