COUNTY ORGANIZED: 1846

COUNTY NAMED FOR: The area was originally named for Robert J. Walker of Mississippi, who introduced into the United States Congress the resolution for the annexation of Texas; however, because he was a Unionist during the Civil War, the state legislature changed the honoree to Samuel H. Walker in 1863.

COUNTY SEATS: One - Huntsville

COUNTY SEAT NAMED FOR: Huntsville, Alabama, former home of the Ephraim Gray family.

COURTHOUSES: Five - 1848, 1853, 1869, 1888, and 1970.

STANDING:  One - 1970 courthouse built of brick and steel.
