COUNTY NAMED FOR:
A Creek town in Russell County,
Alabama. The word derived from the Creek word "oki mulgi," meaning "boiling waters."
COUNTY SEAT NAMED FOR: Same
as the county.

- The 1907 Courthouse was built in
1878 as the Muscogee (Creek) Nation Capitol, and
served in that capacity until Statehood in 1907. It was then
sold to the City of Okmulgee who leased it to the County, and it
served as the Okmulgee County
Courthouse between 1907 and 1917
when the new courthouse was completed. It was sold back to the
Creek Nation in 2010.
