COUNTY ORGANIZED: 1893 following the Cherokee Strip land run in Oklahoma Territory.

COUNTY NAMED FOR: 
President James A. Garfield (1831-1881).

COUNTY SEAT NAMED FOR: Possibly from the "Idylls of the King" by Tennyson.

COURTHOUSES:
A small frame structure was built, but it burned in 1896.  Other buildings were completed in 1904, 1907, and 1934.
