COUNTY ORGANIZED: 1907 from Cherokee lands.

COUNTY NAMED FOR: 
The Delaware District of the old Cherokee Nation. Delaware District took its name from Delaware Town which was located in the Spavinaw Hills in the early part of the last century. It was occupied by a band of Delaware Indians who left the United States and settled in Louisiana Province, then Spanish territory, shortly after the close of the American Revolution.

COUNTY SEATS:
Grove was established at statehood, but Jay, Oklahoma was designated county seat in 1912 for a more centralized location.

COUNTY SEAT NAMED FOR:  Jay Washburn, grandson of an early-day Cherokee missionary.

COURTHOUSES:
1907 in Grove; 1914 and 1941 in Jay.
