COUNTY ORGANIZED: 1912 from a portion of Comanche County.

COUNTY NAMED FOR: 
Cotton, the county's principal agricultural product at that time.

COUNTY SEAT NAMED FOR: William R. Walter, a prominent local resident. Name of the town was changed from Walter to Walters in 1917.

COURTHOUSES:
The first courthouse was a frame building that was a former schoolhouse that was used until the 1926 building was completed.
