COUNTY ORGANIZED: 1907 from a portion of Comanche County, Oklahoma Territory.

COUNTY NAMED FOR: 
The Comanche Indians.

COUNTY SEAT NAMED FOR: Major General Henry W. Lawton, killed during the Philippine insurrection.

COURTHOUSES: 1902, 1939, and 1974.  The 1902 building is the same design as the 1905 Kiowa Couty Courthouse in Hobart and the 1902 Caddo County Courthouse in Anadarko.   It is likely that all three of these territorial county courthouse buildings were built from the same plans provided by the U.S. Department of Interior.
