COUNTY ORGANIZED: 1892 from Cheyenne and Arapaho lands and originally designated as "C" County. The area was opened to settlers in 1892 and the county renamed Blaine.

COUNTY NAMED FOR: 
James Gillespie Blaine (1830-1893), former Speaker of the House of Representatives from Maine, Senator, and Secretary of State under President Benjamin Harrison.  He was also the Republican candidate for President in 1876 and 1880.

COUNTY SEAT NAMED FOR: Wa-ton-gha, Arapaho chief. The word means black coyote.

COURTHOUSES:
Two - A rented two-story frame building followed by the 1906 brick building.
