COUNTY ORGANIZED: 1861

COUNTY NAMED FOR:
 United States president James K. Polk.

COUNTY SEAT NAMED FOR: Francis S. Bartow, a confederate Colonel from Georgia who was the first confederate Brigade Commander to die in battle.

STANDING:
 1909 Neo-Classical courthouse with 1926 addition.  This building now serves as the Polk County Historical Museum;  Also standing is the 1960 modern courthouse.
