Lewis Ledyard Weld, a lawyer and territorial secretary who died while serving in the Union Army during the Civil War.

COUNTY SEAT NAMED FOR: Horace Greeley, editor of the New York Tribune.

 1861 log cabin courthouse, now located in Centennial Village Museum; 1917 courthouse with modern addition.
