During the settlement of Texas churches were among the first
buildings in a new town with many established on or near the
Courthouse Square. All denominations were represented, but
Baptist churches have been very prominent in the history of
Texas development. The name of First Baptist Church became
popular among the new congregations and today it seems as though
there is one in almost every town.
So I settled on a theme to photograph First Baptist
Churches of Texas as I traveled through the state. They come in
all shapes and sizes, but all stand as a beacon to serve the
spiritual needs of the surrounding community;
"Behold I stand at the door and
knock. If anyone hears My voice and opens the door, I will come
in to him and dine with him, and he with Me." Revelation 3:20
The
Baptist General Convention of Texas web site lists
around 800 First Baptist Churches in Texas. Below are photos
of some of these churches, representing only a small number that
share this very distinctive name.
