COUNTY ORGANIZED: 1840

COUNTY NAMED FOR: 
The Sacs or Sauks, a group of Native Americans of the Eastern Woodlands culture group.

COUNTY SEAT NAMED FOR: The Baraboo River.  The Baraboo River was probably named after a French settler in the area, Jean Baribault, although it may also be a corruption of a French word or phrase.

STANDING:
 1963 modern courthouse made of concrete and stone, and 1905 courthouse made of stone.
