COUNTY ORGANIZED: 1909
COUNTY NAMED FOR:
William Andrews Clark, a Montana copper magnate and U.S.
Senator. Clark was largely responsible for the construction of the Los
Angeles and Salt Lake Railroad through the area, a factor heavily
contributing to the region's early development.
COUNTY SEAT NAMED FOR: Las
Vegas was named by Spaniards in the Antonio Armijo party, who used the
water in the area while heading north and west along the Old Spanish
Trail from Texas. In the 19th century, areas of the valley contained
artesian wells that supported extensive green areas or
meadows (vegas in
Spanish); hence the name Las Vegas.
COURTHOUSES: 1909, 1914, and 2005
- perhaps others as well.
